Habit: Great blue lobelia is covered in deep blue flowers on 2 to 3 ft tall stalks from late July through September. It attracts hummingbirds and insects in abundance. Adapted to moist poorly drained soils in shade it readily grows in any average moderately rich garden soil. Very deer resistant.

It is naturally found in swamps, floodplain forests, and low wet woods. Fairly short lived but easily reseeds itself. It primarily naturalizes from countless tiny seeds dispersed through flooding and soil disturbance.
